new work submissions

 

Joshua Robson Productions is opening their new work submission window from Nov 17th-Dec 1st. We are looking for writers with projects at various stages of development.

We are a growing company, and with the knowledge that music theatre development takes time, we are aiming to expand our artist support over the next two years. There is no restriction on experience in writing; from debut writers to those already published, and those from other writing backgrounds who are open to exploring music theatre. We are looking for artists with interesting ideas, and it’s our job to help guide those ideas through development and to the stage.

Last year we provided financial support to two new Australian projects, helping to support the next phase of development. In these call outs we try to cater the support to the project through discussions with the artists.

 

ELIGIBILITY

  • Music Theatre is our primary focus as a company, however we will consider plays where music or movement plays a significant part in the story and atmosphere.

  • We are open to ideas at various stages of development, from finished shows, to new concepts – however any pitch decks would be best accompanied with a script sample, song demo, or examples of your previous work.

  • The project must not have had a professional season*

  • Artists may submit more than one project, however we encourage artists to consider projects that are their current focus. Each project must be a separate submission via the portal.

  • Any adaptations must already have rights secured.

  • We are looking for potential, not perfection.

  • Previously submitted projects are not eligible unless they have gone through significant rework 

    *We define professional season as having a week or more of shows where the cast and creatives were paid profit share or equity terms

We have a small development fund with various levels of support available and while we wish had a greater capacity, we won’t be able to offer feedback to every artist who submits. Our aim is that all artists will hear back from the team by the end of 2025.

FAQs

What form should my files be in?

Please share all files via a link (Gdrive, Dropbox, etc). Scripts, pitch decks and script samples should be in PDF form. Song demos should be mp3. Please make sure to provide the password, or make sure links are not permissions protected.

Can I submit more than one project?

Yes you can, however we encourage artists to submit work that is their current focus, and we require that each project be submitted separately via the portal.

What happens after the submissions window closes?


We will aim to meet with a shortlist of artists, and those who have not been shortlisted will hear back from the team by the end of 2026.

Will I get feedback on my work?

As we are a small team, we are unfortunately unable to give individual feedback on any work.

What can I submit?

We’re open to pitch decks, full scripts, script samples and song demos! The aim is to show us the style, concept and your ideas as an artist.

I’ve written an adaptation, but haven’t secured the rights yet, can I still submit?

Unfortunately, we are unable to consider adaptations that have not already secured rights.

Can I submit a project I have submitted before?

We can only consider works that have gone through significant rewrites or development since the last submission window. We view “significant” as being heavily rewritten, expanded, or completely redrafted. If you are unsure, please reach out to admin@jrpaustralia.com

What kind of projects are you looking for?

We are keeping a very open mind about our development work: musicals, plays with songs, gig theatre, and more! We don’t want people to feel like they’re restricted by what they’ve seen from JRP before. We’re ultimately hoping to support artists that we find interesting, and that we feel we can offer appropriate support to.

What kind of support do you provide through the submission process?

Part of this process is to meet new artists, and to find out how we can best support their development. Sometimes that can be through providing paid writing time, dramaturgical support, budget towards working with a specialist (sensitivity readers, consultants, etc), or even budget towards actors and space for a reading.

We try to cater each offer of support to the needs of each project.

I’ve never made a pitch deck, what kind of information should it have?

A pitch deck (or pitch doc) should tell us about the ideas behind the project and why you want to make it. It should tell us what you know at this point in the project (Themes, tone, characters, storyline, references, etc) and what you see the final product being.

Each project is different, so some may need more information on references, and others may need more details on the themes and tone. The aim is provide enough information to convey the feel of the project in lieu of a formalised script or song demos.

When do submissions close?

12pm AEST Dec 1st 2026. We are unable to accept submissions after this time.
